Mastering Your 6-String Ukulele (Guitalele) Online Tuner

If you recently picked up a 6-string ukulele—more commonly known as a guitalele or a 6-string tenor ukulele—you might notice it looks a bit different than a traditional 4-string uke. Because it blends the compact, nylon-string feel of a ukulele with the extra range of a mini-guitar, tuning it requires knowing the right notes and using the right online tool.

What Notes Do You Tune A 6-String To?

Unlike standard 4-string ukuleles that use gCEA tuning, a standard 6-string guitalele is tuned to A-D-G-C-E-A.

Think of it like a standard guitar with a capo clamped firmly on the 5th fret. Starting from the thickest string (closest to your chin) to the thinnest string (closest to your toes), your open strings are:

  • 6th String: A (Low A)
  • 5th String: D
  • 4th String: G
  • 3rd String: C
  • 2nd String: E
  • 1st String: A (High A)

(Note: Some players also use a 6-string “lele” with doubled courses like a 12-string guitar, but the single-course guitalele using A-D-G-C-E-A is by far the most common!)

How to Use an Online Tuner for Your 6-String

Most web-based or browser tuners are built for standard 4-string ukuleles or 6-string guitars, but you can easily use any chromatic online tuner or a multi-mode instrument tuner to get your 6-string in perfect shape.

Follow these steps for a stress-free tuning session:

  1. Find a Chromatic Tuner: Open a reputable free online instrument tuner in your browser (ensure it has microphone access enabled, or use a reference-tone option).
  2. Work from Low to High: Pluck your thickest string (6th string, A). Watch the on-screen needle or note display.
    • If the letter displayed is too low (
